& Cleaning Tips
We are happy to provide here for our visitors a new cleaning tip every day. Whether you are a professional cleaner, a homemaker or just surfing around the net, we think you may find some useful information. We have also included tips on safety and other interesting items which have been graciously submitted by our visitors. If you would like to add an entry of your own, please send it to us via e-mail for our review. We thank you in advance for your participation.
Please refer to these cleaning solutions for use with our cleaning tips. ALCOHOL SOLUTION - Use neutral spirits grain alcohol or clear (uncolored) rubbing alcohol. Mix 5 parts water to 1 part alcohol. Methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol are also appropriate alcohols to use. Plain, old VODKA (undiluted) works great as an alcohol solution!! You can prepare a simple AMMONIA SOLUTION for cleaning activities by mixing one tablespoon of clear household ammonia with one-half cup of warm water. Remember, the more time you blot, the better and always rinse any cleanup job thoroughly. BLEACH - Use hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate, present in Snowy or Clorox II. Do not use chlorine bleach. Mix 20 parts water to 1 part bleach, to start, and then carefully increase your dilution if needed. DETERGENT SOLUTION - Mix one teaspoonful of a colorless, mild detergent or dishwashing liquid in a cup (8 ounces) of lukewarm water. Very simple solution that is very effective on many stains. DRY-CLEANING SOLVENT - Volatile dry spotter or a commercial spotter such as Carbona, Energine, K2R. These solvents are very aggressive so please follow directions on containers closely. Should not be diluted but use sparingly. And be careful as they can damage sizing, backing or stuffing materials. Do not use gasoline, lighter fluid or carbon tetrachloride in place of a cleaning solvent. ENZYME DETERGENT - Mix a solution of enzyme detergent (found in most supermarkets) following the directions on the label. You will know an enzyme detergent by the labeling or advertising on the front of the container. Do not soak or overwet the area you are cleaning. Allow the solution to remain on the stain for the recommended length of time before removing. (Professional cleaners may prefer to use digesters separate from detergents.) POG - Again, look at the labeling of the products on the shelf. Paint, oil and grease remover are found in nearly all hardware stores. VINEGAR SOLUTION - Mix 1 part white household
vinegar with 3 parts water. (for a stronger cleaning agent, you may
want to use up to a 50% acetic acid solution). Ironic as it may
seem, this solution is surprisingly good for removing strong odors. |
